Medicare - Understand Your Options

Having a lot of options is good, but making a choice can become overwhelming.  With so much information flooding into your mailbox, how do you know where to begin? And how much of it even applies to you?

First things first – Don’t get frustrated and throw up your hands, or resort to the “I’ll have what she’s having” method of simply signing up for what your neighbor/friend/cousin did. She’s a smart gal after all, right?

The most important aspect of your decision making is really understanding the parts of Original Medicare (Part A & Part B), knowing when you become eligible and the applicable enrollment timelines, and your private supplemental coverage options (Part D, Medigap, Medicare Advantage). There are many online resources and materials you can turn to for information. It’s been our experience that folks absorb these concepts better if they have someone knowledgeable and reliable who they can ask their questions along the way. That’s why for nearly fifteen years we’ve been offering free education events and consultations we call Medicare 101 – a clear and straight-forward presentation outlining the basics of Medicare including:

  • Who is eligible for Medicare

  • When can I enroll in Medicare

  • Part A – Hospital benefits

  • Part B  - Medical Benefits

  • Part D – Prescription Drug Plans

  • Medigap – Medicare supplement plans

  • Medicare Advantage Plans (Part C)

At least three months before you become Medicare eligible (due to 65th birthday, retirement, or disability determination) you should start this process. Once you understand the building blocks of Medicare and how the options differ, we work together to determine which strategy will best meet your needs and how you use care. It is a very personal decision and one that can significantly impact your future finances. We do all of this before ever discussing any particular insurance company or plan. Once you are confident in your strategy decision, as an independent Broker we can present insurance solutions available in your area that are a good match and help you apply.
